It is no secret that parents are under a lot of stress these days. Being a new Mom myself, I know firsthand how difficult it is to find childcare when both parents have full-time careers. When I first found out that I was pregnant I was of course elated, but also in the back of my mind I was deeply concerned about the future of my career. Being a female in a male dominated field, I was apprehensive to tell my employer, especially since I had just started working for Farrell Chiropractic Center, and it was March of 2020, the beginning of the pandemic. I waited until I was 10 weeks into my pregnancy to make sure this tiny person was going to stick around before I informed my boss, Dr. Farrell, about it. After I let my secret out, I was immediately relieved because he was just as excited as I was about this new life.
As my pregnancy progressed, thoughts about how I was going to be able to nurse my daughter while working as a chiropractor, kept racing through my head. One day my boss brought up the idea of adding a nursery to our office building so that I could bring my daughter to work with me and so that future moms could do the same. I was honestly shocked and not expecting this to be an option for me, since I am not the practice owner and I do not have the power to make those types of decisions.
Having my daughter so close by while I’m at work has allowed me to be more present while working, and better able to focus my energy on my patients. I know that she is in good hands being that my co-worker’s wife takes care of her during the day and if she needs anything I’m just a few steps away. If I had to place my daughter in a daycare off-premises, I know that I would be constantly worried about whether or not my daughter would be getting the care that she needs at such a tender young age, and that would affect my ability to be the best doctor I can be for my patients.
